Name 1 of 99
الرَّحْمَٰن
Ar-Rahman
The Most Merciful
Meaning & Root
Root: ر ح م — From the root ra-ha-mim, the root of rahmah (mercy) — and of rahim, the womb. The form of Ar-Rahman is intensive and vast: mercy as Allah's very nature, encompassing all of creation, believer and denier alike, before anyone has done anything to deserve it.
In the Quran
الرَّحْمَٰنُ ﴿١﴾ عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ
"The Most Merciful — He taught the Quran."
— Surah Ar-Rahman 55:1–2
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿٢﴾ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
"All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds — the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy."
— Surah Al-Fatihah 1:2–3
الرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ
"The Most Merciful, established above the Throne."
— Surah Ta-Ha 20:5
Reflection
There is a reason this is the first name. Before you learn that Allah is King, before you learn that He is Almighty or Subduer or Judge, you learn that He is Ar-Rahman. The tradition did not order the names alphabetically. It opened with mercy, because mercy is the doorway through which everything else about Allah is meant to be understood.
You already say this name more than any other. Every surah of the Quran but one opens with it: Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim — in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Think about what that placement means. The Quran does not introduce its Author as the Powerful or the Watcher, though He is both. At the threshold of every chapter, before a single command or warning, the Author identifies Himself by mercy — twice. If you have ever felt that religion is primarily a ledger of your failures, the Bismillah is a standing correction, repeated 113 times.
The grammar of the name matters too. Arabic can express a quality in stronger and weaker forms, and Rahman is one of the most intensive forms the language has. Scholars described it as mercy that is vast, overflowing, essential — not a mood Allah enters, but what He is. This is why Ar-Rahman’s mercy reaches everyone: the grateful and the heedless, the believer and the one who has never once prayed. The sun this morning rose on people who spent the night disobeying Him, and it warmed them anyway.
And the root goes somewhere tender: rahim, the womb, comes from the same letters. The first mercy any of us ever knew — being carried, fed, and protected before we could do anything to earn it — is a shadow of this name. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah is more merciful to His servants than a mother to her child (Bukhari and Muslim). Not as merciful. More.
Start here, and stay here a while. Every other name you will learn — even the names of severity — sits inside the reality this one establishes. His mercy, He has written, precedes His anger (Bukhari). Yours to do: walk through the door He opened first.
Living Ar-Rahman
- 1
Begin things with Bismillah — consciously. Before you eat, drive, open your laptop, or start a difficult conversation, say Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim and mean the middle word: you are stepping into this moment inside His mercy.
- 2
Extend mercy to someone who hasn't earned it. Ar-Rahman's mercy reaches people who deny Him entirely; let some of yours reach the coworker, sibling, or stranger who has done nothing to deserve your patience today.
- 3
When you fall short, turn toward Him rather than away. The instinct after sin is to hide. But a name this vast means the door is open precisely when you feel least worthy of walking through it.
A Dua Using This Name
يَا رَحْمَٰنُ ارْحَمْنِي رَحْمَةً تُغْنِينِي بِهَا عَنْ رَحْمَةِ مَنْ سِوَاكَ
"O Most Merciful, have mercy on me with a mercy that makes me free of needing mercy from anyone besides You."
